NEW YEAR, NEW ME!

The majority of us begin each New Year with a new sense of possibilities. This is THE year we finally make more money, lose weight, get in shape, pay off debt, write our book, etc., etc., etc. However, within the first 60 days of the year (or less), all that motivation fades away and you look at yourself and your life and everything pretty much looks the same…or sometimes even worse. You may have actually gained weight or gone deeper into debt. Why does this happen to so many people? Simply put, the year may have changed, but you haven’t. Stated more specifically, your HABITS haven’t changed and that’s why you didn’t meet your goals. So, what can you do to change that? Just follow these 3 steps:

 

1) Find someone who has already achieved what you want to accomplish and learn what they did to reach the goal you want.

 

Human beings are herd creatures by nature, which means the majority of us become very similar to the people with whom we spend the most time. If you want to get in shape, find someone who is already in shape to follow and learn from. If you want to make more money, find someone who is making more money than you and learn how he/she became financially successful.

 

2) Identify ONE thing that they did or currently still do and DO EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

 

If they don’t eat fast food and brown bag their meals, you bring your meals to work. If they don’t have or don’t carry any credit card debt, stop charging your purchases and wait until you have the cash to pay for what you want. If they’re a writer and they write 250-500 words every day, you do the same. If they read 30 minutes each day, then you do the same (ask for book recommendations).

 

3) Find an accountability partner.

 

Many times we keep our goals to ourselves. This allows us to go easy on ourselves or reverse course in case we decide to change our minds. No one will know we failed. If you really want to achieve that goal, tell someone what you want to accomplish AND tell him or her to check in on you on a regular basis (at least weekly) to monitor your progress.

If you follow these 3 steps, you will end this New Year as a New You!
